KINGSPORT - Helen Derting Weatherly, 93, Kingsport, passed away on Monday evening, January 8, 2018, at Asbury Place following a long battle with Parkinsons.
Helen was born in Norton, VA and grew up in Hiltons, VA until moving to Kingsport. Upon Joe’s retirement, they returned to the family farm in Hiltons. She was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Curtis Weatherly, and parents, Corbett and Dana Derting.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Beth Jones and husband, Bob, and granddaughter, Kate Jones.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Asbury Place for their compassionate care of Helen.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The memorial service will follow at 2:30 pm with The Rev. Jack P. Weikel officiating.

KINGSPORT - Sherwood M. “Woody” Caldwell, 80, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord early Thursday morning January 11, 2018 at Select Specialty Hospital in Bristol.
The family will receive friends from 4 pm to 6 pm on Saturday January 13, 2018 at Holy Mountain Baptist Church, 3121 Ashley Street, Kingsport, TN 37664. A funeral service will follow at 6 pm at the church with Pastor Jerry Musick, Pastor Tim Price officiating. Music will be provided by Sue Watts.
A graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Sunday January 14, 2018 at Oak Hill Memorial Park with Pastor Mike Malone officiating. Mittie Wyonnia Crawford Taylor (Sukie) and Earl McCellan Taylor, Sr.
Mittie Wyonnia Crawford Taylor (Sukie), born November 15th, 1961, and Earl McCellan Taylor Sr., born August 13, 1933, went to be with the Lord on January 9th, 2018. Wyonnia was a loving mother, wife, sister, aunt, cousin, and best friend. She was of the Baptist faith. Wyonnia loved everyone she was around. Her husband of 40 years, Earl, passed away hours later from a broken heart. They will both be greatly missed by many.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at Trinity Memorial on Saturday January 13th from 5pm to 7pm. The family requests those attending to dress casual and plain country like, no fancy city suits or ties. Funeral service will follow at 7pm with Pastor Chad Roberts of Preaching Christ Church officiating. Graveside service will be held at 2pm on Sunday January 14th at Light Cemetery (Beech Creek).

KINGSPORT - Savannah Lee Roller, 20, Kingsport, TN, passed away at her home on Tuesday, January 9, 2018.
Savannah was born on June 8, 1997 to Robert Jerry Roller and Tamara Bloyd Roller. She was a 2015 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and was currently a student at Northeast Community College.
She is survived by her parents, Jerry and Tamara Roller, her sister, Summer Lynn Roller, her grandmother, Betty Jones, several aunts and uncles and many cousins.
Savannah had a great passion for the outdoors. She particularly loved hunting and fishing with her dad. Savannah also loved the water and was experienced at sailing. Savannah was a beautiful person inside and out. She lived life to the fullest and everyone who knew her was touched by her kind and giving heart.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 12, 2018 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Christ Fellowship Church, 260 Victor Lane, Kingsport, TN. The Memorial Service will be held on January 13, 2018 at 9:30 am at Christ Fellowship Church with Jake Godsey and Greg DePriest officiating. Savannah will be laid to rest at 11:00 at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Steve "Griff" Griffith
NASHVILLE - Steve “Griff” Griffith, 63, of Kingsport, passed away Friday, January 5, 2018 at Deberry Hospital, Nashville.
He was born May 12, 1954 in Prestonsburg, KY, to the late Harlan and Mary Ruth Trimble Griffith.
Griff had lived in Kingsport for the past 32 years.
He was an auto mechanic at Griff’s Auto Repair. Griff loved life, riding his Harley and spending time with his family.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Keith Griffith.
Surviving are his loving wife of 35 years, Susan Free Griffith; children, Chris Rife-Griffith, Krista Sword and spouse, Eric Johnson and Mistri Griffith and husband, Paul Zamarono; grandchildren, Stevey Dettor, Tristan Johnson and Jasper Zamarono and several nieces and nephews.
A Gathering of Remembrance will be from 5 – 7 pm Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Oak Hill Funeral and Cremation Services.
A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 7 pm in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel with Eulogies given by Melanie Pendleton, Danny Simpson and Krista Sword.

Douglas Alan Pendergrass
KINGSPORT - Douglas Alan Pendergrass, 56, of Kingsport, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2018, at Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born July 27, 1961, in Kingsport.
Douglas was a kind, “happy go lucky “ guy who made friends very easily. He enjoyed working on cars and was a NASCAR, UT Vols and Tennessee Titans fan.
He retired in 2011, due to medical issues and attended Cedar Grove Baptist Church.
Douglas was preceded in death by his father, Walter Pendergrass; maternal grandparents and his paternal grandparents.
Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Eva McMurray Pendergrass; brother, Michael Pendergrass; several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-6:45 pm on Monday, January 15, 2018, at Oak Hill Funeral & Cremation Services. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 7:00 pm in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel.
A Graveside Service will be conducted at 10:00 am Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at Oak Hill Memorial Park in the Garden of Meditation.

KINGSPORT - Mrs. Betty Jewel Dees, age 72, Kingsport, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2018 at Holston Valley Hospital.
Mrs. Dees was born in Scott County, VA and daughter of the late Albert Vernon & Anna Mae Hughes Winegar. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rodney J. Dees, a brother, Tom Winegar and three sisters, Sue Buchanan, Bobbie Tate, and Pat Johnston.
She attended Bethesda Unites Methodist Church.
Mrs. Dees was a seamstress and had worked at US 1.99 Cleaners.
Survivors include a son, Brian Arrington, Kingsport; three sisters, Joyce Winegar, Delores Rupe (Ken) and Sandra Donihe (Mark), all of Kingsport; two brothers, Darrell Winegar (Debra), Church Hill and David Winegar (Trina), Kingsport; grandson, Dustin Arrington; and a granddaughter, Samantha Arrington; and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 pm Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jeremy Dykes officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm Sunday prior to service

Clay E. Boyd, Jr
JOHNSON CITY - Mr. Clay E. Boyd, Jr, 88, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2018, at the Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Rock Springs, Tennessee, Clay was the son of the late Clay E. Boyd, Sr. and Nell King Boyd. He was a 1947 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School, served in the United States Army during the Korean War era in the Army Security Agency, and graduated from ETSU in 1954. He became a Certified Life Underwriter (CLU) and owned and operated the Clay Boyd Insurance Agency for over 60 years, working up until the day he died.
Clay was active in the Optimist Club for many years, building over 30 clubs and serving in numerous leadership roles including International Vice President.
Clay was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Johnson City.
In addition to his parents, Clay was preceded in death by his sister, Velma Boyd Hill.
Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-one years, Joann Isenberg Boyd; a son, Clay Evans Boyd, III; and three daughters, Beth Dunbar and her husband Warren, Ruth Stokes and her husband Noah, and Jennifer Hansen and her husband Jess; two sisters, Faye King and Jeweldene Calvetto; several nieces and nephews. He was lovingly known as “Grand Clay” by his seven grandchildren, Leah Stokes Ross and her husband Will, Jake Stokes, Sarah Stokes, Henry Hansen, Graham Hansen, Amelia Hansen, and Hannah Boyd. He will be missed by his family, especially for his jokes and stories.
The family of Clay E. Boyd, Jr. will receive friends from 1 to 3 pm Monday, January 15, 2018, at First United Methodist Church of Johnson City. The funeral service will follow at 3 pm with the Reverend Jane Taylor officiating. The graveside committal service will be conducted indoors at 10 am Tuesday at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Ministers, family, and friends are requested to meet at the mausoleum prior to 10 am.

CLARKSBURG, WV - Margaret E. Helton, 75, of Clarksburg, WV, passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at the WVU Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
She was born in Kingsport, TN on May 18, 1942, a daughter of the late Marjorie Cox Jennings. Margaret is survived by her husband of 55 years, Troy Allen Helton.
In addition to her husband Margaret is survived by three children: Sherry Melisa Shea and husband Jim of Salem, OH, Troy Allen Helton Jr. and wife Penny of Volga, and Shannon Wade Helton and girlfriend Andrea Wilson of Clarksburg; one brother, Ernest Jennings of Church Hill, TN; nine grandchildren: Krystal Estes (Josh), Jennifer Helton, Curtis Helton, April Griseto (Donald), Josh Barker, Briana Barker, Matthew Kopcsak, Abbie Shea, and James Shea; five great-grandchildren: Alexander Reyes, Isabella Griseto, Anthony Coss, Kylie Helton, and Harley Estes; a niece Amy Jennings; and a nephew Micky Jennings.
In addition to her mother Margaret was preceded in death by siblings: Frank Jennings, Hansel Jennings Jr., Jason Jennings, Zola Mae Morelock, and infant twins Johnny and Jane; and one great-grandchild Marissa Helton.
Margaret was a homemaker who enjoyed cleaning and keeping her home tidy as well as gardening. She loved shopping whether it was her daily trips to the Dollar Store, or online with home shopping and Amazon. Margaret also loved her Chihuahua “Angel,” and always made sure she was well cared for.

GATE CITY, VA - Rhea E. Kern, age 89 of Gate City, VA passed away on Friday, January 12, 2018 at his residence.
He was born in Duffield, VA on May 24, 1928, and was the son of the late Floyd and Allie Kern. Other than his parents Rhea was also preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie Kern Brewer; 2 sisters and 4 brothers. He attended Spears Ferry Church and was a veteran of the US Army. He loved hunting, fishing and reading his bible.
Mr. Kern is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nora Lane Kern; a daughter, Denise K. Hill (Robert); 1 grandson; a brother, Cecil Kern (Gladys) also several nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT - Launa Lorraine Lawson, 78, of Kingsport, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2018, at Wexford House.
She was born May 16, 1938, in Fall Branch, TN to the late, Wilson and Opal Roberts Light.
Launa was a loving and caring mother and grandmother whose greatest joy in life came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking and listening to Gospel music.
She was a graduate of Fall Branch High School where she played basketball and attended the Baptist church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Lawson; one sister and four brothers.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Robin Lawson Dowell Shortt (Leon); sons, Ricky L. Lawson (Jewel), Jeffrey A. Lawson, Timothy B. Lawson, Michael R. Lawson (Amy) and Gregory D. Lawson (Susan); nine very special grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
It was Launa’s request to be cremated and for her family to have a private service at a later date.

Hazel Irene Huff Elder
Hazel Irene Huff Elder, 102 departed this life Thursday January 11, 2018.
Born September 6, 1915 to Dr. James S. Anderson and Mary Elizabeth Bowman in Chattanooga, TN, she attended school in Lenoir City, TN and the Tan Modeling School in Chicago, IL.
Hazel was married to the late Edward J. Huff for fifty years, until his death in 1984. From this union they had seven children. In 1988 Hazel married the late Isom Elder, until his death in 1998. He bought to this union two children. Hazel was a member of Friendship Baptist Church for more than forty years. She then moved to Kingsport, TN and joined Shiloh Baptist Church where she was a faithful member for over twenty-five years. After relocating back to Greenville, TN she attended Jones Memorial Church.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands; one daughter; Julia Margaret Huff; and two sons Charles Bowman Huff and Edward Eugene Huff.
She leave to cherish her memory three daughters, Barbara Robinson (Greenville, TN) Brenda Bond (Durham, NC) and Katherine Blume (Greensboro, NC) one son, Danny Huff (Peggy) (Kingsport, TN) two step daughters; Nancy Hamilton (Donald) and Mary Ann Jordan (James) both of Greeneville, TN. Two daughter in-laws, Mary Sue Huff (Elizabethan TN) and Doris Huff (Savannah, GA) 15 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12:30pm Saturday January 20, 2018 at Friendship Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 10:00am- 12:30pm at the church. Interment will follow at Martel Cemetery, Lenoir City, TN.
