KINGSPORT - Ralph Jefferson Chandler, Jr. age 89, of Kingsport, passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2018, peacefully at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital. He was veteran of the United States Army having proudly served his country during the Korean conflict. Ralph was retiree of Anderson News with 45+ years of service. He was a member of Holy Mountain Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Chandler; parents, Ralph J. and Katherine Poteet Chandler, Sr; infant brother, Hayburn Chandler ; brother, Carl Chandler; and sister, Eleanor “Bill” Wilkerson.
He is survived by his step-son, Mike Hagey (Sonia) of Knoxville; daughter, Karen Carrick (Gene) of Gray; grandchildren, Benjamin Carrick (Ashley), Elizabeth Carrick, Anna Grace Carrick, Nicholas Hagey, Abby Carrick and Sarah Hagey; niece, Katie Cherry; nephew, Rusty Chandler; and a host of friends.
A military graveside will be held at 2:30 pm on Friday, January 19, 2018 at Mountain Home National Cemetery with American Legion Hammond Post #3/265 performing military rites. All those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 2:15 pm.

Wayne E. Starnes
KINGSPORT - Wayne E. Starnes, age 75 of Kingsport, entered into the gates of Heaven on Saturday, January 13, 2018.
Wayne was born on May 3, 1942 in Kingsport, TN to the late Wrightly Ellis Starnes and the late Ada Jessie Starnes. On December 4, 1967 Wayne married his most cherished friend and love of his life, Phyllis Kidd, and after 50 years of a beautiful life together, she survives.
After working 32 years at Eastman Chemical in the CE Division: in the acid concentration department as a chemical operator, Wayne retired in April of 1997. In 1998, Wayne started working as a school bus driver for Mike Conkin and Mike Cox. Wayne drove for 15 years for the Holston and Central areas and he enjoyed the time that he got to spend with students; he was well known for sharing his knowledge of animals to the students as they rode the bus; and he always treated each student with dignity and respect. Wayne enjoyed hunting and fishing as he was a true outdoorsman. He also enjoyed sports and he always supported his Tennessee Vols. Wayne loved his family and he was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather; and he was a wonderful provider for his family. The legacy that he left will continue on in the lives of his family for generations to come.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; an infant child; one brother, Bobby Ellis Starnes; and two sisters, Nancy Allen, and Charlotte Phillips. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Phyllis Starnes; son, Wayne Edward Starnes, II; two daughters, Tresa Allen and husband Steve, and Angela Calton and husband Scott; grandchildren, Brayden and wife Megan, Zachary and Michael Allen, Makinleigh and Braylee Calton, and Trinity Starnes; and several loving nieces and nephews.

Margaret Standifer Gilbert
WISE, VA - Margaret Standifer Gilbert, 88, passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at The Lighthouse PCH in Rocky Face, GA.
She was born in Benham, KY to Herbert and Hattie Standifer and graduated from Cumberland High School.
Margaret was a retired teacher and enjoyed a 19-year career with Wise County Public Schools, first at Coeburn Primary School, and then at L.F. Addington Middle School in Wise. Prior to teaching in Wise County, she worked for Dilenowisco Early Chldhood Development Program and for Dwina School for preschool handicapped children in the early 1970s. She was a 1971 graduate of Clinch Valley College, with a B.A. in History. She held a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Development from James Madison University, and a certificate in Learning Disabilities from Virginia Commonwealth University. She was a member of Norton Church of God for over 50 years and taught the Adult Bible Class for over 20 years. She served in various church leadership positions over the years, including Ladies’ Auxiliary President and church clerk, and also served as interim choir director and pianist. She was a member of the Fortnightly Club of Wise and the Garden Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Harold Lee Gilbert; daughter, Dana Gilbert Hayes; sister, Rae Standifer Black; brothers, Thomas “Gene” Standifer and Frederick Warner Standifer; and sister, Joyce Standifer Monhollen.
Margaret is survived by daughters, Rhonda (Larry) Colley of Ooltewah, TN and Myra (Brian) Fox of Hixson, TN; grandchildren, Heather (Mark) Addison of Wise, Brittany (Derek) Malcolm of Bristol, Cameron Gilbert Fox and Madison Grace Fox of Hixson; great-granddaughter ,Emilee Addison of Wise; grandchildren, Sean (Zulma) Colley and Shawna (Charles) Zimmerman; brothers, Carson Leon Standifer of Tacoma, WA, Edward B. (Janette) Standifer of Chattanooga, TN, and Wayne H. Standifer of Cleveland, TN; many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Thursday, January 18, 2018 from 5:00 P.M. till time of services at 7:00 P.M. at the Sturgill Funeral Home in Wise, VA. Mary Freeman Williams
GLADY SPRING, VA - Mary Freeman Williams, age 77, of Glade Spring, Va., went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 15, 2018, at Johnson City Medical Center.
Mary touched many lives in the Southwest Virginia Community by her many years of being an Addictions Counselor. She retired from Highlands Community Services in Abingdon, Va. after holding the position of Director of the Intensive Outpatient Addiction Recovery Program. She was instrumental in developing Bristol Drug Court and worked as a substance abuse counselor at Lifeline Services in Abingdon. Most recently she worked as a volunteer at Johnston Memorial Hospital in the Outpatient Diagnostics Center. Mary received her undergraduate degree from Emory and Henry College and her masters in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Mary loved working in her garden and taking trips with her special group of girlfriends. She also loved spending time with her family and many friends at her beloved cabin. She was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church in Meadowview, Va.
She was born to the late John Robert Freeman and Marguerite Tully Freeman on November 28, 1940. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Filbert “Phil” Williams; and her brother, John William Freeman.
She is survived by her brother, Richard “Dick” Freeman and wife, Jean, of Onancock, Va.; two sons, Michael Williams and wife, Lisa, of Kingsport, Tenn. and John Williams and wife, Paula, of Glade Spring, Va.; two dearly loved grandchildren, Emmy Williams and Skylar Williams; nephew, Chris Freeman and wife, Anna; and two great nephews, Sam and Wes; and a host of cousins.
Calling hours will be from 10:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Friday, January 19, 2018 at Mary's home.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 19, 2018, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Dan Birchfield officiating. Jerry Vanice Caldwell
CHURCH HILL - Jerry Vanice Caldwell, 72, passed away on January 14, 2018 at 10:55am at his home surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with myeloma cancer.
Jerry was born in Surgoinsville, TN to Kelly and Maude Caldwell on October 15, 1945. He worked as a Computer Technologist for the Eastman Chemical Company and retired after 45 years. Interests and hobbies included traveling/camping throughout the US. He especially loved Canada, Alaska and Yellowstone National Park. He enjoyed being a licensed Amateur Radio Operator (HAM Operator) and he went by the call sign of WB4UMC, he loved assisting the Salvation Army and was a board member, he also enjoyed photography and spending time with family and friends.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents Kelly and Maude Caldwell, sister- Beatrice Winstead, two brothers Tison and Chester Caldwell.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife Reta of Church Hill, TN. He is also survived by children: Son- Kevin Caldwell (Shawn), Son- Brian Caldwell, Daughter- Lisa Duncan (Bart), and Daughter- Holly Sykes (Jason); Siblings: Brother-Lester Caldwell, Brother-Conner Caldwell (Joyce), and Sister- Audrey Hansard (Hobart); Grandchildren: Tyler Caldwell, Chasity Coward (John), Johnathon Duncan, Jordan Caldwell (Stephanie), Joshua Duncan, Mykala Caldwell, Taylor Sykes and Connor Sykes. APPALACHIA, VA - James C. “J. C.” Boatwright, Sr., 84, passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Norton, VA.
J.C., as he was affectionately known, was a lifelong resident of Appalacha, VA. He was a retired conductor for Norfolk Southern Railroad. J. C. proudly served his country in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a deacon in the First Baptist Church, Appalachia, VA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie (Bloomer) Boatwright; his parents, Creed and Anna Mae (Campbell) Boatright, Sr.; a brother-in-law, Bobby C. Tucker; and three half-sisters.
Surviving are his son, James C. “Jim” Boatright, Jr., of the home; one sister, Barbara B. Tucker of Rogersville, TN; two brothers, Ted R. Boatright and wife, Sue of Fredericksburg, VA and Creed Kelly Boatright, Jr. and wife, Phoebe of Crofton, MD; and several nieces and nephews.

Susie was a member of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church where she was active in the choir.

KOKOMO, IN - James D. “Butch” East, 72, of Kokomo, IN passed away Jan. 12, 2018, after a lengthy illness.
He served in the U.S. Navy. Butch had worked numerous jobs in the field of construction as a contractor. He was a talented musician, woodworker and an avid NASCAR fan.
James was preceded in death by his parents James C. and Myrtle Blankenbeckler East; grandson, Dustin Wallen; brother, John East and sisters, Frances McConnell, Jo Bishop, Jean Redwine and Jeanette Householder.

WEBER CITY, VA - Ezra Presley Legg 77, of Weber City, left this world on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Wellmont Hospice House.
Presley was a car salesman for most of his life working for various dealerships in addition to owning L & M Motors in Kingsport, TN. Most recently he was employed at Mountain Connections taking care of his boys. Presley had an exciting social life he enjoyed going out to eat with friends and family, and listening to his son play music. He was a dedicated husband as well as a loving father and grandfather.
Presley was preceded in death by his loving wife of 44 years, Norma Legg; parents, James and Maggie Legg; brothers, Garnett Smith, Morgan Legg, Earl Legg, and Porter Legg; sisters, Ethel Anderson and Edna Legg.
Survivors include his son; Anthony Legg and wife Connie; grandson, Avery Legg; granddaughter, Haley Legg; step- grandchildren, Mahaley, Austin, Colton, and Hunter McReynolds; great-grandson, Axton Tribble; great- granddaughter, Elli Brown; sisters-in-law, Lilian Legg and Mary Legg; along with many loving family members and friends.

Irene Pratt Cole
KINGSPORT - Irene Pratt Cole, 93, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, surrounded by her family whom she loved with all her heart.
She was born on May 14, 1924, in Hawkins County, Tennessee, to the late, Tom and Mary Ann Pratt.
Irene was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Cole, in 1981; brothers, Rev. Walter “Ray” Pratt and James Edward Pratt; sister, Anna Lee Ford; and her daughter-in-law, Judy Cole.
Those left to cherish Irene’s memory are her son; Eugene Cole; daughter, Janice (Larry) Harrison; three grandchildren, Kristi (Richard) Hicks, Tammy (Steven) Hayes, and Brad (Brooke) Harrison; six great-grandchildren, Courtney (Austin) Byrns, Makayla Harrison, Callie Stone, Makenzie Harrison, Madelyn Hayes, and Ryan Hayes; great-great-grandson, Braxton Byrns; sister, Reta Kate Burke; brothers, Rev. J.R. (Hazel) Pratt, Tom (Billie) Pratt, Jr., Louis Glen Pratt, and former daughter-in-law, Paulette Poli.
Irene was a member of Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church. She was a beautician, and she had owned her own shop for many years. Irene was also an instructor at Barton’s Beauty School until her retirement.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 18, 2018, in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel of Oak Hill Funeral and Cremation Services.
A Funeral Service will follow at 7:00 pm in the Chapel with Dr. David Harrison, Pastor, Homeland Baptist Church, officiating.
A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, January 19, 2018, at Oak Hill Memorial Park in the Garden of the Last Supper. Serving as pallbearers will be Eugene Cole, Brad Harrison, Richard Hicks, Steven Hayes, Ryan Hayes, and Paul Peters.
The family would like to extend our special thanks to Indian Path Hospital, NHC, and Hospice for their wonderful care and kindness extended to our family during this difficult time. We would also like to acknowledge Kilene Nixon as Irene’s very special caregiver and friend.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Irene’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.

Doris Page Ramey
KINGSPORT - Doris Page Ramey, 88, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Monday morning (January 15, 2018) at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born in Scott County, VA and resided in Kingsport for 71 years. She was a school bus driver with Hawkins County Schools for several years. She also worked in the daycare at Apostolic Lighthouse Church for many years. She was an active member of First Apostolic Christian Church. Mrs. Ramey was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Rev. Carl E. Ramey, Sr.; a daughter, Mary Frances Simpson; a granddaughter, Lore Jo Ramey; sons-in-law, Willie Simpson and Cecil Arrington; her parents, R. J. and Minnie Page.
Doris Ramey is survived by her children, Lois Arrington, Minnie Rhoton, Viola R. Campbell and husband, Bill, Michael S. Ramey, Dorothy Duda and husband, Bill, Gene Ramey and wife, Trudi; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; brothers, Mack Page and wife, Linda and Robert Page; her sister, Mabel Wolfe; a special uncle, Junior Page along with several nieces and nephews. A special thank you goes out to Mountain States Hospice and Staff, especially Sarah Hickey for the special care given to Doris during her illness.
A visitation will be held on Thursday (January 18, 2018) from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport or friends may also call anytime at the residence of the daughter, Minnie Rhoton or the residence of the son, Michael Ramey. A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday (January 18, 2018) at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Billy Wayne Arrington and Pastor Tommy Benton officiating. Music will be provided by Anna Begley and Billy Wayne Arrington. A graveside service will be held on Friday (January 19, 2018) at 11 a.m. at East Lawn Memorial Park with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Pastor Tommy Benton, Hunter Couse, Michael Edward Ramey, Ethan Hutson, and Cheyanne Hutson will serve as honorary pallbearers. Family and friends attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m.

Helen Ruth Dye
CHURCH HILL - Helen Ruth Dye, 80, went home to be with the Lord on Monday morning surrounded by family.
Helen was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was a homemaker, but worked along side her husband when needed. She was an avid gardener and loved her flowers.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Hobert Dye, parents, John & Stella Feagins, brother, Ronnie Feagins, sister, Doris Mitchell and son-in-law, Ron Martin.
Survivors include her children, Ricky Dye and wife, Beth, Donnie Dye and wife, Patty, Rhonda McIntyre and husband, Ed, and Brenda Martin. Grandchildren, Brandon Dye, Natasha Marsha, Brittany Miller, Marty Martin, Dillon Dye, Lily Roberts and several step grandchildren. Great grandchildren, Lucas, Noah, Emma, Ashton and Ben.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 pm Thursday at the Johnson – Arrowood Funeral Home and anytime at the residence of her daughter Rhonda McIntyre. Funeral services will be conducted 7 pm Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Chad Roberts and Rev. Glen Stewart officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted 11 am Friday at the Church Hill Memory Gardens. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:15 am Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.
