MT. CARMEL - Lois Arline Davis, age 83, of Mt. Carmel went home to be with her Savior on Sunday, May 6, 2018. Born in Kingsport she lived in the area most of her life. Lois was a homemaker all of her adult life devoting herself to the care of her family. She pioneered a church newsletter that would keep her church family updated and faithfully served as the pianist for Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church in excess of 60 years. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Bessie Brown. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years James Burdell Davis; sons, Richard Davis and Gary (Shirley) Davis; daughters, Lisa Harper and Cindy Davis; brother, Johnny Neal Brown (Lori); grandchildren Leo Roybal and Jeremy Salazar; sister-in-law Sue Brown; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 12 until 2 PM on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at Tri-Cities Funeral Home in Church Hill, TN. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM with the Rev. DUFFIELD, VA - Michael Bowen, 57, of Duffield, VA passed away Monday, May 7, 2018, at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of Scott County and was employed at Black Jewel/Revelation Energy as a coal miner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Irene Ramey Bowen; sisters, Inez Brooks, Ellen Collier, Ida Miller; and brother, Carl Bowen. Michael is survived by his wife, Lisa Taylor Bowen; daughter, Brandy Vanzant and husband Brandon; son, Shane Bowen and wife Pamela; grandchildren, Rustin and Isaiah Vanzant, Kaden Bowen, Madison Derossett and Allie Darnell; sisters, Hazel Haycaft, Diana Couch and Freeda Mullins; brothers Fred, Glen, Lynn, and Larry Bowen. Betty Lou Rhea Lamb was born in Sneedville, TN on January 3, 1925 and passed away on May 6, 2018. She was an avid member of Victory Baptist Church when she was in good health. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Bertha Rhea; former husband, Garrett Lamb; son, Esco Joe Lamb; 4 sisters, Dorothy, Jean, Mary and Noradale; and 6 brothers, Sonny, Paul, Edward, Mack, Tom and Bud. Betty is survived by her daughter, Margaret Lamb Coots and husband, Wade; daughter-in-law, Judith Lamb; 5 grandchildren, Tammy Coots Hicks and husband, Carl, Robyn Lamb, Greg Coots and wife, Kenitha, Crystal Salyer, and April Overbay and husband, Robert; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; special brother-in-law, Carson Lamb; and 2 sisters, Lucy Ramey of Dayton, OH and Celia Collins from Mooresburg, TN. CHURCH HILL – Mervin Caston Johnson, 68, passed away on May 6, 2018 at his residence. Mervin was born in Manhattan, New York. He was of the Methodist faith and attended St. Mary’s Wesley Methodist Church in New York City. He went to Knoxville College where he played football and basketball. He worked as a security officer and enjoyed travelling. He is preceded in death by his parents, William & Catherine Baker Johnson. Mervin is survived by his daughter Erica Hunter (Jordan), grandchild Norah Hunter, sisters Brenda Johnson & Mary Vanderhourst, brothers Hammuel Johnson & Hiram Johnson along with several nieces and nephews. We celebrate the life of Katharine Virginia Shivar. She was 98 years old when she passed away on May 5th, 2018. She joins her husband Stokes (Toby) Shivar, and sons David and Thomas Shivar. She is survived by her son Richard Shivar, daughter Sally Piercy, grandchildren Jennifer Oxendine, Sarah Cole and David Piercy and great-grandchildren Piercy Oxendine, Deshawn and Dylan Cole. Katharine was born in Greenwood, South Carolina in 1919. She met her husband Toby after graduating high school in Charlotte, North Carolina. After serving in World War II they moved to Kingsport, Tennessee to raise a family. They were married for 63 years. Katharine was an active and engaged member in Kingsport civic life. She was a long time member of the Parent Teacher Association, Kingsport Garden Club, Kingsport Symphony Women’s Committee and worked as a Teaching Assistant at John Sevier Middle School. She was an active member of Waverly Road Presbyterian where she participated in a number of ministries including the Shepherd’s and the Food Pantry. Her ashes will be interred at Oak Hill Memorial Park next to her husband in a service for immediate family only. To honor Katharine’s life, contributions can be made in her name to Waverly Road Presbyterian Church, 1415 Waverly Road, Kingsport, Tennessee 37664. The care of Katharine Shivar and her family has been entrusted to Oak Hill Funeral and Cremation Services.

ROGERSVILLE - Barbara Emma Knight, 73, was taken to heaven while surrounded by her family who loved her on Thursday, May 3, 2018. Barbara was born on September 25,1944 and was the daughter of William and Emma Heil. She graduated from Georgia Baptist College of Nursing.  She retired from her fifty year nursing career in September of 2017.  Forty-three of those years were spent working at Indian Path Hospital where she was nominated for the Servant’s Heart award for outstanding performance. Barbara is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Michael Knight; children, Michelle Maddux and Michael Knight; grandchildren, Maya, Elijah, Ester, Shiloh, and her special grandson Tucker Maddux; daughter-in-law, Cathy Knight and ex-son-in-law, Stephen Tucker Maddux; her brothers, Bill, Jim, Tom, John, and Kenny Heil; and many loving nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, May 11, 2018 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home in downtown Kingsport. CAPE CORAL, FL - Carter L. Shelton, 74, of Cape Coral, FL passed away Friday, May 4, 2018, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was the son of late Olin R. and Ethel C. Shelton of Shelton, CT. During his professional career, he held management and administrative positions for several companies which include AVCO-Lycoming in Stratford, CT, Bassick Castors in Bridgeport, CT and Spring Valley, IL and Fourco Glass Co. which became AFG Industries in Bridgeport, WV and Kingsport, TN. He retired from AFG Industries as Director of Purchasing and Transportation in 1994. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Donna Shelton; a daughter, Carol Babbitt and a son Craig Shelton, both of Salem, WV; as well as two grand-children, Jake Babbitt of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Stephanie Babbitt of Salem, WV. The family wishes to thank the hospice staff of Hope Healthcare for their care and support. 5/17/1929 – 5/6/2018 Elizabeth (Betty) Emery died on Sunday, May 6th, 2018 at Holston Valley Medical Center following declining health.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Roy R. Chastain and Elizabeth Longmire Chastain, her husband, Russell Van Emery, Jr., and her sister, Dorothy Wayne Chastain Coughlin.  She is survived by her four children and their spouses; Susan Emery Hubbard (Virgil)  of Knoxville, Russell Van Emery III (Carol) of Jackson, TN,  Robert Wayne Emery (Susan) and John Franklin Emery (Alisa) both of Kingsport; ten grandchildren, Ryan Hubbard (Jessica), Elizabeth Hubbard Rogers (Mark), Peyton Anne Hubbard (fiancé Randall Schurig), Russell Hubbard, Kate Emery Heginbottom (Roger), Suzanne Emery Bowen (Matt), Harrison Emery, Luke Emery, Reece Emery, and Hannah Emery; three great-grand children, Emily Elizabeth Hubbard, Colton Russell Heginbottom, and Deacon Ryan Hubbard Betty was born in Knoxville, TN where she resided for most of her life.  She graduated from Knoxville High School, and also attended Salem Academy and the University of Tennessee, where she was a member of Alpha Omega Pi. Betty attended West Hills Presbyterian Church, where she was a charter member.  She lived briefly in Middle Tennessee, and then returned to Knoxville to work at Southern Bell while her husband, Russ, served in the USAF in Korea.  While raising a family and supporting her husband in his growing business, Betty enjoyed an active social life which included a life-long passion for bridge (attaining Life Master status), UT sports, Cherokee Garden Club, Nine O’Clock Cotillion, and  bowling.  She became a widow in 1972 and continued to raise her children with a tenacity and determination that served her well.  While doing so, she also worked as a bookkeeper at Crenshaw Children’s Shop where she loved to interact with people.  Following her retirement she volunteered at East TN Children’s Hospital, which filled her with a tremendous sense of purpose and belonging.   In November 2016 she moved to Kingsport, TN to live near her two younger children.  She was an active participant in the Senior Adult program at First Baptist Church, Kingsport and continued to play bridge at the Kingsport Senior Center while also enjoying the activities at the Preston Place community where she resided. The family will receive friends in Kingsport on Friday, May 11th, from 4:00-5:30 pm at First Baptist Church, Kingsport, with a brief service to follow officiated by Dr. Marvin Cameron. A memorial service and receiving of friends will be held in Knoxville on Tuesday, May 29th at West Hills Presbyterian Church.  Details will be announced at a later time. August 3, 1950 - May 6, 2018 GAS CITY, IN - Kathy Lynn (Robbins) Smith, 67 of Gas City, Indiana died Sunday May 6, 2018 at St Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Kathy was born in Fort Knox, KY on August 3, 1950 to the late and great Hagan Glen and Hallie Marie (Perry) Robbins. She was a graduate of Fairmount High School (Class of 1968) where she was a proud member of the National Honor Society and an active bowler. She is the wife of Ronald Lee Smith. They were married August 22, 1970. They celebrated 47 wonderful years together. Kathy was a stay at home mom that was very involved with her children. She was a very loving and supporting mom. She was also a great Mamaw that spoiled her only granddaughter. She loved her Yankee Candles, although she never burned them. She loved to collect “Beatles” memorabilia and lighthouses. She spent many hours reading and learning new things. She also frequently walked her miles at the Wellness Center in Marion. She is survived by her two children, Heather (Jeremy) Morgan of Gas City, IN and Jennifer Smith and partner Heather Williams of Brownsburg, IN; One grandchild, Tyme Herzog; Two Brothers, Stan (Cindy) Robbins of Fairmount, IN and Rick (Carol) Robbins of Stillwater, MN; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Kathy was a very kind and caring person. She never met a stranger. She talked to everyone and made everyone feel special. She was a comedian all on her own and cracked herself up a lot. She always knew the right thing to say and her hugs where like wings of an angel.  Local arrangements have been entrusted to the College Park Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 4601 South Western Ave, Marion, IN 46953 where the family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 from 4-6. Funeral Services is Friday, May 11, 2018 at 3 PM at Sturgill Funeral Home, 298 Harrell Street, Pennington Gap, Virginia with visitation 1 ½ hours prior to the funeral. ROGERSVILLE - Joyce Ann Carpenter, age 62, of Rogersville, passed away on Monday, May 7, 2018, at Holston Valley Medical Center after a long battle with cancer. She was a was daughter of the late John and Una Stapleton Pearson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Teresa Smith; and brother, Daryl Pearson. She enjoyed crafts, flowers, decorating, and flea markets. Survivors include her soul mate, Jerry McPeak; loving daughters, Georgie Bowman and husband Doug, Kasey Salyer, and Rebecca Bishop; sister, Greta Williams; and brothers, Carson and Johnny Pearson.  The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Christian-Sells Funeral Home in Rogersville. JOHNSON CITY - Michael Patterson Breeding, 59, Johnson City, died on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at Johnson City Medical Center from a brave fight with throat cancer.  Michael was born in Norton, Virginia in 1958 and moved to Kingsport, TN the summer of 1972.  He graduated from Dobyns- Bennett High School in 1976, where he was a standout varsity athlete in football, basketball and track. While a DB Indian he was honored to have been coached by the legendary Buck Van Huss. He attended college at MTSU and returned home to marry the love of his life, Dudley Carter.  He considered his marriage and his children his most important accomplishments.  Michael spent his free time coaching city league sports teams.  After his children were grown he continued to coach and touch many lives.  He considered all those he coached his own.  His coaching days were cut short when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2007.  He spent his last decade fighting and determined to survive because he loved his life and those in it.  His family is grateful for the love and support from the Oncology Department at Vanderbilt Medical Center.  In his homecoming he will be reunited with his four grandparents, several cherished aunts and uncles and his cousin, Keaton Patterson. Michael is survived by his wife, Dudley Carter Breeding; daughter, Mackenzie Breeding Thorpe and husband, Alex; sons, Landon Carter Breeding and Wyatt Patterson Breeding; granddaughters, Lyric G. Snyder and Lyla Jean Breeding; grandson, Hudson Michael Thorpe; parents, Martha and Buzzy Breeding; sister, Kelli Breeding; brothers, Mark Breeding and wife, Kelley, and Patrick Breeding and wife, Bonny; nieces, Casey Carringer, Alex Breeding, Keaton Breeding, Molli Hopkins and Anna Cate Breeding; nephews, Cameron Carter, Carson Carter, Aidan Carter, Grant Carringer, Spencer Breeding, Austin Breeding and Noah Breeding; and his best friend, dog, Apollo. A graveside service will be held on Thursday at 3:00 pm at Oak Hill Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2018, at 6:00 pm at First Christian Church, 200 E. GATE CITY, VA - Paul Elmer Starnes, 85, Gate City, VA passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, May 7, 2018. Paul was born in Slant, VA on July 29, 1932. He was one of eleven children born to Bartley Johnson Starnes and Emma Taylor Starnes. Paul joined the United States Marine Corps in 1952 and served on the HMR-262, one of the first helicopter squadrons ever organized in Marine Corp. history.  He continued his military service by serving in the Virginia Army National Guard over a period of ten years with the “Bailey Bridge Builders”. In 1998, Paul realized his love of oil painting while taking classes at the Gate City United Methodist Church under Dr. Dan Culbertson. Paul retired from Holston Defense in 1994 after 24 years of service in several divisions, i.e., production, roads, and grounds. He was a member of the Starnes’ Bluff Evangelical Church. Paul had several great loves of his life, his wife, Lynda, the U.S.M.C., his children, his family, genealogy research, and oil painting. He had such a great love and belief in his children, grandchildren, and adopted grandkids. In addition to his parents, Bartley (1965) and Emma (1993); his loving wife, Lynda Joyce (Ervin) Starnes (1975); sisters, Lora Starnes Liner, Nell Starnes Egan, and Allie Mae Starnes Depew; and brothers, Willie Hascue Starnes and Eddie Starnes preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter, Emma Marie Starnes; son, Robert “Rob” Paul Starnes; grandchildren, Christopher, who he raised as his own, Katie Rae, Lindsay, and Tommy; sister, Mary Starnes Browning; and brothers, O. B., Roy Buford, Clifford Dale, and Charles Mack Starnes; his two special friends, Sheila Farmer and Phillip Dingus; along with several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, May 10, 2018 at the Gate City Funeral Home Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. James “Jim” Harless and Rev. Robert Fletcher officiating. Marcus Smith will be providing the music. Military graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA by the American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, TN and Post #265, Gate City, VA assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Military Honors Team. His adopted grandkids will serve as pallbearers. Richard Williams, Casey Good, Jake Spivey, Richard “Worm” Little, Dan Jett Mays, Jr., Jessie Clyde Hensley, Thomas William Baker, James Michael Shull, and Jamie and Josh Hensley will serve as honorary pallbearers.
